A message from Chief John Mooney

On behalf of the men and women of the Atlantic City Police Division I am pleased to welcome you to our web site.

As we enter the 21st century law enforcement is presented with a myriad of challenges and opportunities. Utilizing a philosophy of community policing and a continuing commitment to excellence and service our agency is eager to accept these challenges and explore the opportunities. To date, community policing has presented the community an opportunity to take an active part in the deployment and utilization of the division’s assets. I eagerly solicit additional suggestions and observations on how to improve our level of service and expand the interaction between the police and the community. The partnership that develops is a critical element in any successful law enforcement agency.

We are committed to growth and innovation. That growth may be the multi-year task of accreditation through CALEA or the daily task of resolving quality of life issues in the neighborhoods. New ways of doing old things is the wave of the future. Business world- wide is doing more with less by downsizing and finding innovative ways of cooperation. Law enforcement can do no less. NASA is not alone in seeking ways to do things quicker, cheaper and faster.

This, our third annual report, again highlights the law enforcement and service activities of the Atlantic City police department during the years 2002/2003. Our relatively small resident population of approximately 40,000 people is in stark contrast to the visitation of over 30 million people per year. This contrast places a unique challenge on a police department.

While the activities of the Atlantic City Police division may not directly affect the crime rate, there can be no doubt that the men and women of this agency have had a major impact in our community. The improvements in the quality of life for our residents and feelings of safety for our visitors are just two examples.

On the following pages we have tried to share with you some of the efforts and activities your police division has engaged in throughout the year. I sincerely hope that the information is useful and enlightening. I can assure you the men and women of the Atlantic City Police Division will continue to strive to make the “WORLDS FAVORITE PLAYGROUND” a safe and enjoyable place to live, work, and play.

The Patrol Section of the Police Division handles the majority of the calls for service that we receive annually. In 2002 our division handled (171,494) calls for service, and in 2003 (167,328). Recognizing that our tourist industry the lifeblood of the city, the department employs various methods of patrolling tourist areas. The Atlantic City Boardwalk is a world-renowned venue and is showcased in this report

Sincerely,
John Mooney.
