Community Policing Programs

Some of the programs that the Community Policing Section has been involved with are listed below. Most of these programs are ongoing and interested persons can get information on joining these programs by calling the Community Policing Section.

Ready to Ride Program

This program is a cooperative effort between Egg Harbor Township P A L and the Atlantic City Police Department Community Policing Unit. The program trains our intercity youth in safety, maintenance, and riding of off highway vehicles[dirt bikes and all terrain vehicles].

Children are taken to a 30 acre maintained and certified track for riding these vehicles. They must successfully complete written and practical examinations in addition to a motorcycle riding test. Riders are monitored when riding, while in school and while at home and in the community.

Rules on the tract are more strict that on the road.

• Report cards are monitored
• Teachers and Parents are in constant communication with Officers
• Participants are required to attend Work & Ride session which include the task of maintaining the track and cleaning the streets as well as other community projects.

Dedicated participants who abide by all the rules are given the opportunity to attend various Road Trips. The group has traveled to the Poconos, for riding, Bell plain State Park, Michigan State and Maryland State.

Bowling Club Program

This program also requires monitoring and involvement with the parents, schools and Officers, The Showboat Hotel donates the facilities and equipment for a group of 50-75 intercity youth. Comradery, communication and cooperation are but a few of the lessons taught.

Ice Skating and Ice Hockey Program

This program exposes the children to the world of ice skating, social interaction and athletic coordination. The Sea Skate Skating Rink donates use of equipment and the facility. The hockey program is named after the first professional African American Ice Hockey Player Art Dorrington, who provides a positive role model for all the youth involved.

Urban Golf Program

This program is a co-op with the L P G A, Seaview Country Club and retired Phila Phillie Greg Maddox, along with many volunteers. The Atlantic City School system refers first and second graders to us who have various difficulties with their schoolwork. Many of these children do not have a parent who cares enough to assist them with their homework.

-For the first hour with them we work with their homework assignments and weaknesses in school.

-The second hour consists of avid golfers teaching them the fundamentals of golf. When these children are taken out of their enviroment and exposed to these influences they truly flourish. We also have a Junior Program which consists of older children [11 years-18 years old] some of whom are now very good golfers because of this program.

Sport Outings Programs

The children in the city may never have the opportunity to attend a Flyers game, 76 er’s game, Philadelphia Phillies game, Atlantic City Surf game. NJ Nets game, and many other sporting events were it not for the Atlantic City Police Departments Community Policing Unit. All of these professional teams provide the tickets. We provide the rides and supervision.
