Community Relations

The Police Community Relations Unit provides programs that strengthen bonds between the Police and the public, and also attempts to earn its support. A list of the services that are provided by the Police Community Relations Unit are as follows:

1. Neighborhood Disputes Referrals from Council Ward members, neighbors and people involved in the disputes are mediated, prior to any court action.

2. Protest Demonstrations/Pickets/Labor Disputes

3. Special Problems in Schools When problems occur that involve school intervention, this unit is asked to assist, if possible, to avoid any student from having a criminal record.

4. National Night Out This event brings out the Mayor and Chief of Police directly to the people of Atlantic City; to interact and show their support and community involvement against crime. This activity takes place the first Tuesday in August.

5. Crime Prevention Programs/Lectures

     a. Neighborhood Watch is a program where the citizens and the Police          Department join together to develop a workable solution that can assist          the Police and general public in reducing or eliminating crime.          Certificates are received upon completion of the program.

      b. Security Surveys are used to find weaknesses in homes or businesses.           Recommendations are given to correct or better secure the premises           from theft or vandalism.

      c. Project Identification is a program that helps deter burglars, assist in           the arrest and prosecution of criminals and assists in the return of stolen           property.

      d. Senior Citizen Crime Awareness Program Preventive measures are           taught on how not be victimized. Lectures and videos are presented.

      e. Con Game Information emphasizes on Senior Citizens… advice is            given on how not to impart with your personal valuables to scam artist.

      f. Holiday and Vacation Tips Preventive measures advises one on          "What to do and What not to do" while you are away from home during          these times.

      g. Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) classes are taught in the           Atlantic City Public and Parochial Schools at the sixth grade level.           Visitation classes are taught at the lower grade level.

      h. Project Fingerprint is a program that enables a child to be           fingerprinted in school. Upon completion, the fingerprinted card is sent           home with the child. Parent authorization is required prior to being           fingerprinted.
