Community
Policing
The Community Policing Unit, in conjunction with the City’s Community Partnership Program, spent the year working on quality of life issues affecting the City’s citizens and visitors.
In addition to conventional police work and assisting the Patrol Division as needed, the Community Policing Unit supported such non-traditional public safety programs as neighborhood anti-drug marches and beach sweeps for homeless individuals.
Throughout the year, the Community Policing Unit was active in the City’s civic life. By participating in events such as parades, church functions and community sporting events, these bicycle-based units not only enforced the law, but served as Good Will Ambassadors for the City.
Several of the officers assigned to the Community Policing Unit have actively participated in programs targeting children and families determined to be “in-need”. Officers coach in the youth football league, help with the Urban Golf Program and have become involved with the Women-of-Tomorrow Mentoring Program and the Community Response Team. Additionally, Community Policing officers have been instrumental in developing the City’s pioneering Domestic Violence Response Team
