From the Chief

This annual report highlights the law enforcement and service activities of the Atlantic City Police Department during the year 2000.
The City of Atlantic City has a population of approximately 40,000 residents. However, the City enjoys an annual visitation rate of 30 million people. This contrast between a relatively small residential population and a very large visitor base places unique challenges on a police department. The organization is required to simultaneously balance the needs of the residents with those of the tourism industry which drives our economy.
According to the statistics
supplied by the New Jersey State Police, Atlantic City has seen an overall decrease
in crime of 17.1% between 1999 and 2000; the City’s violent crime rate has decrease
by 17.1% and its non-violent crime rate has decreased by 15.3%.
During the year 2000, the Atlantic City Police Department processed 168,870 public safety calls, with the Patrol Division alone responding to 80% (135,242) of these requests-for-service. In the charts and narrative that follow, the efforts of the Police Department in organizing, responding to and successfully managing this caseload are highlighted. It is my hope that the information contained in this report will make the citizens of Atlantic City as proud of the men and women who serve in their Police Department as I am of them.
