Intelligence Unit

The Police Intelligence Unit works closely with other units within the Police Department in a concerted effort to gather information and disseminate what is learned to the appropriate individuals.  As such, the Intelligence Unit is actively involved with the General Investigation Unit in developing vital information related to a variety of situations.  This information is often included in briefings for the Patrol Division (especially concerning issues of Officer safety) and at shift roll-calls.

In addition to working with other members of the City’s Police Department, the Intelligence Unit assists the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and the New Jersey State Police as necessary.

An added function of the Intelligence Unit is Dignitary Protection.  This past year the Unit was responsible for the protection of a number of high profile individuals when sufficient threat levels were ascertained.

Year 2000 saw 2 Intelligence Unit detectives assigned to the FBI’s Fugitive Task force.  These detectives arrested several individuals wanted for first and second-degree offenses (i.e. murder, rape, robbery and bank robbery) in Atlantic City.  In addition to arresting suspected criminals, these detectives develop sources of information that is shared with the Operations Bureau.

The Intelligence Unit is currently working to establish a Gang Database, which will provide a central repository for gang related information which will be available to appropriate individuals
