Police Academy

In Atlantic City, the Police Academy not only trains new recruits for the Police Department, but is also responsible for all in-service and ongoing qualifications training for existing Police Officers.

During 2000, Academy staff scheduled a diverse series of training programs for the City’s law enforcement officers.  The 31 different courses included Automatic External Defibrillator/Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation, Sexual Assault Response training, Spanish for Law Enforcement Officers and “method of instruction” courses for Academy instructors.  These new courses supplemented the traditional firearms and other recertification courses and K-9 schools held throughout the year.

Academy goals for 2000 included updating of testing procedures for recruits to the Police Academy and the return to the in-service curriculum of the driving proficiency course.  Staff also planned to conduct 2 new basic recruit classes.  All of these goals were accomplished.

On the agenda for the new year will be the return of the Academy Staff to the City, where they will continue to develop curricula for the Department.  The K-9 trainer will continue with the present assignment of recertification of dogs and handlers.   The Firearms Range Master will continue to requalify Emergency Response Team members, and will continue to maintain the Department’s weapons.
