Traffic Bureau
The Traffic Bureau consists of the Parking Enforcement Unit, the Motorcycle Unit the Traffic Investigations Unit and the School Crossing Guard Program.
During 2000, the individual units of the Traffic Bureau
issued 10,000 motor vehicle summons and 32,000 parking tickets, investigated
3,832 traffic accidents (6 fatal and 966 involving non-fatal injuries), towed
4,000 vehicles and arrested 554 individuals (315 for driving while under the
influence of alcohol and/or drugs [DWI]).
Fines resulting from these efforts, combined with monthly auctions of impounded and abandoned vehicles, generated $1,490,000 in revenue for the City of Atlantic City.
The Traffic Bureau’s long-time practice of temporarily impounding vehicles operated by individuals arrested for DWI became standard operating procedure for the Atlantic City Police Department and has recently become law in the State of New Jersey. Named for Lt. John Elliot, an Atlantic County resident killed in a drunk driving accident, “John’s Law” requires a mandatory twelve-hour “hold” on vehicles operated by individuals arrested for DWI.
