GENERAL INVESTIGATIONS SECTION
The General Investigations Section (“GIS”) is responsible for the investigation of serious and non-serious criminal complaints as well as crimes against people and property.  It is also responsible for investigating cases of unexplained death.
New Homeland Security measures have increased the responsibilities and cooperation of the General Investigations with outside Agencies such as the New Jersey State Police, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco & Firearms.
The GIS is comprised of the Warrant Unit, the Police Aide Program, the Pawn Unit, the Technical Agency Computer Operator, the Arson Unit, the Domestic Violence Response Team, the Juvenile Bureau, and the Forensic Investigations Unit.
In the year 2002 The 10 Officer “Casino Investigation Unit” was phased out, and the investigators were absorbed into the General Investigations Unit in order to streamline the division and handle the more than 12, 961 criminal investigations generated in 2003.

Cooperation between the Police Department and the Atlantic County Major Crimes Squad continued during 2003/2004.

Atlantic City experienced 6 homicides in 2001, 5 in 2002, and 5 in 2003.  When a homicide occurs in the City, GIS detectives are assigned to the case and work directly with the Major Crimes Squad in a spirit of cooperation.

The General Investigations Section is where most investigations and complaints are initiated. Most Patrol related incidents are handled through this section as well. Incidents handled by this section include everything from minor disputes to the most serious crimes.

Juvenile Investigations

As the name of this section would imply, these detectives handle all investigations involving juvenile incidents. This includes incidents occurring in the school system where several Detectives are assigned on a daily basis.

Forensic Investigations

This branch of Investigations handles evidence identification and collection, processing of fingerprints and crime scene investigation. Sometimes an entire case hinges on evidence found by members of this unit.

Special Investigations

This section handles the investigation into vice related incidents and crime. The types of incidents include narcotics trafficking, prostitution, and ABC (Liquor Law) violations.
