K9 PATROL

The Atlantic City Police Department has one of the finest K-9 Unit’s and K-9 training programs in the United States. We have trained law enforcement agencies along the entire Eastern United States and the U.S. Virgin Islands.  Our training includes a 16 week K-9 patrol school and a 10-12 week K-9 specialty school which includes narcotic, explosive and arson detection K-9 training.

The K-9 training is conducted at the Atlantic County John “Sonny” Burke K-9 Academy located just outside of Atlantic City.  This prestigious training site is certified through the United States Police Canine Association.   The K-9 Academy is proudly named after the late John “Sonny” Burke.  Burke was an Atlantic City K-9 Officer who was killed in the line of duty in 1970.  A picture of K-9 Officer Burke standing along side of his K-9 partner hangs on the wall of the K-9 Academy.  Every K-9 Officer that enters through the doors of our K-9 Academy will never forget the ultimate sacrifice he made.

The Atlantic City Police Department K-9 Unit consists of K-9 Patrol and K-9 Specialty (narcotic and explosive detection) Teams.  Our K-9 Patrol Teams are dual-purpose and trained for both patrol and narcotic detection.  Our K-9 unit is a vital aspect of the Police Department.  It assists on a daily basis law enforcement personnel, the citizens of Atlantic City, as well as the millions of people that visit our City. The members of the K-9 Unit are dedicated and professional Police Officers and are the reason why our K-9 Unit is so successful.

The Atlantic City Police Department K-9 Unit and K-9 Training Program is under the command of Captain James V. Pasquale.  For further information, you may call the Atlantic City Police Department at (609) 347-5780.
