Senior Citizens Safety Awareness ProgramFrom the Office of the Chief of Police Contact: ATLANTIC CITY NJ, NOVEMBER 5, 2001- Police and Community partnership were in full swing today, when members of the Jeffries Towers Senior Citizens group joined police and fire department officials in kicking off the "Senior Citizens Safety Awareness" program in their building. Residents are participating in a new program that is designed to assist public safety officials in the event of an emergency in the high rise apartment building. Residents are volunteering to be floor captains, who would in time of fire or other emergency, ensure that all residents of each respective floor, were evacuated and or accounted for. Police Detective Ray Ellis of the police departments "Community Relations Unit", distributed yellow T-shirts and Baseball caps to the floor captains, as well as a number of cell phones that are programmed to dial 911. Residents also participated in a fire drill for the entire building.
Even 100 year old Louise K. Jones (pictured with Ellis), became a full
fledged floor captain. |
